Context-
I made this lesson plan while I was in CI 3750, Integrating Media and Technology into the Classroom, during the spring semester of 2007. I made it under the advisement of Dr. Jeff Goodman. The lesson is centered around students creating stories from a set of pictures, which they must put into a sequence.
Impact-
This lesson meets the following fourth grade North Carolina Standard Course of Study goals:
Language Arts:
4.02- Use oral and written language to presentinformation and ideas in a clear, concise manner and to make decisions.
5.07- Edit to use written conventions of language and format.
5.09- Create readable documents through legiblehandwriting and/or word processing.
Computer/Technology Skills:
2.08- Use menu/toolbar features to edit and makecorrections as a group activity.
3.06- Use word processing as a tool to write, edit, and publish sentences, paragraphs, stories, andassignments.
This lesson also teaches students sequencing skills and cooperation. The students will also be practicing writing skills such as grammar and word choice. Additionally, they will be discussing plot, characters, and setting while they create their stories. Students will also have time to work on a computer which makes them more comfortable with technology as well as reinforcing their technology skills.
Alignment-
Preparing this lesson enables me to meet teaching standards as well. During this assignment I have met the following NETS-T Technology Standards for Teachers:
VI-E- Facilitate equitable access to technology resources for allstudents. I have met this competency because students weregiven equal time at the computer, switching turns as the classproceeded. I also had only two people per computer so each was able to see what was happening and what steps it took to get there. Additionally, students were not to be given theassignment as homework so that those with a computer at home would not have an advantage.
II-A- Design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners. I have met thisrequirement because I made suggestions for altering theassignment based on age level, ability level, and the level of English proficiency.
IV-A- Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques. I have met this standard because I have had the students email their final stories to the teacher. The teacher would then open the emails and print off the stories. During this lesson I used a computer, a printer, and email to assess student learning.
IV-C- Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity. I have met this standard because I have created a rubric that grades the student pairs on this assignment not only by their ability to follow the directions (cut and paste, spell check, and email the assignment), but also on their abilty to cooperate and have equal time while using the computer.
VI-D- Promote safe and healthy use of technology resources. I have met this standard because I have given instructions in my lesson plan to have the students get up and stretch while they are completing the assignment. The stretching not only allows them to refocus their minds on the project, but it also helps prevent carpal tunnel syndrome and other "repeated use" injuries.
