Teaching Small Groups and Case Study

Context:

I created this artifact under the advisement of Dr. Tracie Salinas as a part of CI/MAT 3030, Investigating Mathematics and Learning. This artifact was created as a part of Block 1 during the Spring semester of 2007.

Impact:

This artifact helps students meet this second grade NCSCOS mathematics standard:

1.02- Use area or region models and set models of fractions to explore part-whole relationships in contexts. Represent fractions (halves, thirds, fourths) concretely and symbolically.

Students filled out the coloring sheet by following the directions about fractions. The lesson was a review of fractions and helped the students prepare for their second grade mathematics assessment.

Alignment:

This artifact helped me to meet these NCDPI standards:

Standard 2 Indicator 1: We had to create this lesson based on our knowlege of number sense and number operation. We were able to illustrate and explain fractions to the class while we taught the lesson. We reviewed fractions by having the students tell us the fraction of how many eggs were striped out of the total number of eggs, etc. Then we described th assignment to the students.

Standard 7 Indicator 2: This artifact enabled me to incorporate art into the fraction lesson. I was able to incorporate visual patterns such as polka dots and stripes.

Standard 15 Indicator 1: This artifact enabled me to encourage underrepresented groups to engage in mathematics. During this lesson I gave personal attention and encouragement to both Hispanic students and females. I also used a real-world example of fractions by showing students sets of eggs and having them describe the patterns in terms of fractions. We started the lesson by using concrete examples and then moving to semi-concrete so that the students could review and not get discouraged.
