Context:
This artifact was created under the advisement of Mr. Jeff Goodman during the Fall semester of 2007. It was created in GS 4401: Science and Science Teaching in the Elementary School.
Impact:
By having students do the same assignment they would be able to discuss pollution, industry, and characteristics of different animals. Students would get a cartoon representation of what industry and pollution can do to the environment, which could then lead to a discussion about pollution in everyday life and the things that can be done to prevent it.
Alignment:
Through this artifact I am able to meet the following NCDPI Teaching Standards:
Standard 3, Indicator 1: I have met this indicator because the list of questions generates discussion about the relationships between humans and the environment. All humans have an impact on the environment and The Lorax gives the opportunity to discuss what the Onceler did to his environment and to the other organisms around him.
Standard 3, Indicator 3: The Lorax gives a simple and effective illustration of what industry and the over use of natural resources can do to the environment. Over using something as simple as Truffula trees affected the entire area and all of the organisms in it. The animals left and birds could no longer fly through the smog. The book gives an example of pollution that can then be analyzed and compared to real life.
