Context:
This project was completed during the Fall semester of 2007, under the advisement of Dr. Allen Bryant and Mrs. Janet Barr. It was completed in a sixth grade class at Blue Ridge Elementary School. The service project that I chose to do was to make fleece blankets to give to a local hospital. The students made two blankets and wrote letters to accompany the donation. The blankets were sent to the children's ward of Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, NC. The remaining letters will be passed out to other patients.
Impact:
Through this service project students will see the importance of helping others in the community. They will also see how easy it is to do and will hopefully be more inclined to volunteer in their community. Students will also work on their writing skills as they are writing letters to the patients who receive the blankets.
Alignment:
Standard 16, Indicator 1: By giving making and giving these blankets to a local hospital, students are becoming involved in their community. The effect of the service project reaches further than the classroom or the school environment.
Standard 16, Indicator 7: By completing this project I have encouraged students to participate in civic and volunteer activities because they are taking time out of their day to do something for someone else in the community.
