Class of 2007

International Studies & Advertising/Public Relations major

My curiosity of social inequalities paved my way to pursue my degree in International Studies. The classroom provided the theoretical and analytical, but the experience of working with local organizations working to change the disfranchisement of marginalized communities provided the real-life reality that is crucial to witnessing and being able to empathize with those we hope to serve.

Both hard and soft skills were strengthened and developed. One the practical side, participating in experieintial learning was an introduction to working in a non-profit or a company with a social cause. It was a great pathway to form relationships with local non-profit leaders and create connections for the future. On the human side, we, as students, worked and were mentored by insightful and experts in the field of civic engagement. We had the opportunity to get out of campus and collaborate with local organizations and see first-hand the city from a perspective of a Chicagoan and not just a college student. I am grateful to have worked with professionals who have their heart and brain doing amazing work. The philosophy of the Experiential Learning was to emphasize the asset of a community and working towards solidarity.

The Center for Experiential Learning offered my first professional opportunity into the world of community development and engagement. My first title was Community-Site Coordinator. Now, years later, my current title is Community Engagement Manager! It was the opportunity that made me realize my calling in working collaboratively with marginalized communities that works in a way that is equal and values the humanity of the communities.
