Research Interests

My focus is on American history, with a minor in Public History. I am interested in urban history, particularly in the late nineteenth-century. I am also very interested in religious history (primarily Catholicism, but I am always fascinated by the religious spaces constructed by any community). I love exploring neighborhood parishes of which Chicago has no shortage and seeing what they say about a particular community. I am interested in how varying groups use the seemingly monolithic institution of Catholicism for their own respective purposes. I also maintain a strong interest in military history for a similar reason: I am fascinated by how the armed forces serve as a vehicle for respective ethnicities and minorities, and by how life in the armed forces affects recruits. The role of the military in modern Western society is a captivating topic to me.
