TPE 10- Planning Instructional Time

Student awareness of instructional tasks and learning goals helps in reaching them.  Thus, I use regular classroom procedures allow for the effective use of class time and student understanding of tasks at hand.  I follow a school-wide policy called WOSH, which includes posting and reviewing a warm-up, objectives, standards, and homework in each class.  As students enter my classroom, they complete a warm-up activity in order to stimulate previous knowledge on the topic.  During this time, I am able to assess what students have retained from previous lessons.  Following the warm-up, I go over the agenda and lesson objectives for the day.  These objectives include learning goals and tasks for the day and frame teacher and student expectations for the lesson.  Furthermore, lesson objectives relate to educational standards which are also posted on the board.  Students are expected to complete classroom tasks for the lesson and receive a stamp in their notebooks for credit.  This provides students with additional incentive to complete lesson goals for the day.  Next, homework assignments are posted on the board for students for follow-up.

In addition, students have an outdoor field-work lesson once a week on Thursdays.  During this time, they complete fieldwork studies on a rotating schedule between classes and write up journal entries in their notebooks.  This includes working in the school garden, collecting statistics on school-wide waste, and facilitating the campus recycling program.  I am including a lesson plan that demostrates the instructional planning for a field-work class.
