i-movie

Context:

I created this movie in conjunction with three other students during the fall semester of my senior year for my CI 4000 course. We created a movie entitled "Justin and the Blue Marker" based on the children's book Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. The main concepts remained the same while several elements of the plot were altered for compatability with the medium, available resources, and creative differences.

Impact:

By watching this movie, students will learn several things in several different areas. Students will have the opportunity to analyze the similarities and differences between the movie and the book. This will help their analytical skills as well as help me examine their knowledge of the elements of a story.

Alignment:

This artifact meets NCDPI Standard 6, indicator 1 by demonstrating my knowledge of performance art and drama. This video shows that I have become familiar with some of the things necessary for a good performance and for a good production (in this case, a video). This process includes writing a script, story boarding, filming, acting, creating sets, editing, and creating a DVD.

This artifact meets NETS-T I-B by demonstrating that I can quickly become familiar with new technology and technology in which I have no background. I used the i-Movie program to create this video despite the fact that I have no previous experience with this program. I have the basic computer skills needed to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

This artifact meets NETS-T II-D by demonstrating that I posess the ability to appropriately integrate technology into my classroom. I did not create this video solely to instruct students about video production; I created the video to teach elements of English Language Arts and theater. I posess the knowledge of technology required to use technology when, how, and to what extent it is appropriate.

This artifact meets NETS-T VI-B by demonstrating that I have used technology to reach students of diverse backgrounds, characteritsics, and abilities. The movie I created has very little written or spoken word. Also, when there was written word, it was also read aloud. This will help meet the needs of ESL students who may have trouble with the English language as well as other LD students who may have trouble with written or spoken word. All these students can still enjoy and learn from the movie I have created.

Students will make a video based on a book that we have read in class. It can be a remake, update, mockumentary, spin, replica, or any other version they wish.

The students will write a script, storyboard, film, edit, and produce the film entirely.

Writing the script will help students who enjoy writing and creativity become engaged and involved in the process. Story Boarding is a perfect job for visual/spatial learners in the classroom as well as students who are good at drawing. Throughout the process all students will have extensive opportunities to be creative and apply themselves which helps them take ownership of the project.
