Information on Peru

Official Name- Republic of Peru

Geography- Peru is the 3rd largest country in South America. It's composed from a variety of landscapes including coastlines, mountains, deserts, and rain forests. 

People/Culture- There are various cultures that make up Peru. Such as the Indians (Incas), Spainards and other Europeans, descendants from African slaves, and also asians. Most people resided in the countryside, until recently people moved to the cities in fear of terroism. 

History- Very old country, oldest inhabitants up to 15,000 yrs ago. One of the most important cultures arrived nearly 600 years ago, the Incas, and resided in the city of Cusco.

Form of Government- Constitutional republic. Meaning the have a President, Congress, and Supreme Court. Presidents serve 5 year terms and can serve twice. Peruvians are required to vote by law. 

Economy- Richest country in terms of natural resources. But one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of well being.

Things to see/do- Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, Sacsayhuman, Pisac Market, Miraflores, Inca Trail, Cusco, Lima, Catacombs (Lima)

Capital- Lima (Nearly 9 million inhabitants)

Population- 30,147,935

Official Languages- Spanish, Qeuchua

Currency- Nuevo Sol (Approximetly 1 US Dollar=3 Nuevo Sol)

Area- 496,224 square miles
