Program Outcome 1

Integration of Technology for Diverse Learners

Educational Technology Program Outcome 1:

Practice the integration of technology in educational environments to facilitate experience that address the diverse needs of all learners.

It is important for professional educators to be life long learners.  In doing so, these professionals are better able to facilitate learning for their students, be they children or adults. My artifacts reflect my recognition of how technology affects professional learning in my school building, district, state, and at the federal level.

This application assignment, from ED 5123: Diverse Learners, takes the idea of teaching to diverse learners to the classroom. In it, I write a lesson plan for a High School biology class with a mixed group of students, culturally, cognitively and linguistically. In it, I use several methods to teach a set of vocabulary terms associated with mitosis. The lesson uses varied multiple intelligences to help the students hear, read, and visualize what happens in the 4 steps of mitosis as they study cell division.
  2. Creating a Diversity Portrait (1).pdf Creating a Diversity Portrait (1).pdf
In this analysis paper from ED 5123: Diverse Learners, the assessment profile for the Hispanic population of students at Donald E Gavit Middle/High School is examined. As compared to the general population of the school and the state of Indiana, Hispanic students appear, on the surface, to be successful in reading and writing conventions. However, when assessment scores for sciences (biology is examined) are reviewed, the ability to comprehend reading and writing appears to fall off. This paper looks at the possible reasons for this and how Gavit plans to attack the issue.

  1. Jillian's Meteorology Presentation Jillian's Meteorology Presentation
One of the final products of the Weather Project. In assessing this assignment, I looked for research skills, creativity in the production of the presentation and appropriate forecasting skills. Some of the students in one class are special needs and I felt it was important they learn to create presentations. The task instructions were modified slightly for them to accommodate particular abilities of the 5 special needs students in the class. This student, a 14 year old with a speech impediment and learning disability, insisted upon doing as much of the research and production as possible by herself. All I did to help was make sure the animations worked. She is very shy, yet stood before her classmates and presented this Power Point like a pro. Her new nickname? Lil Al Roker!

Program Outcome 2

Research-based Instructional Strategies

Educational Technology Program Outcome 2:

Choose experiences and assessments that apply technology to engage learners through the implementation of research-based instructional strategies.

Educators use technology as a tool to facilitate learning and create student centered learning environments. Educators use research based strategies to make technology use effective and efficient. My artifacts reflect my ability to evaluate technology tools for use in the classroom and create an assessment tool to measure proper use of the evaluated tool.

From ED 5153: Research Methods, this is part 3 of a research project to learn how attitudes towards science and math change among African American girls. In this part of the study, research methods used are explored and a discussion of the literature is reviewed.
  2. Action Research Methodology part 2.pdf Action Research Methodology part 2.pdf
From ED 5153: Research Methods, this analysis paper explores an action research question on how to involve girls, in particular African American girls in science and math related courses and careers. In it, I review the literature on the topic of using technology to interest and engage girls in the sciences and mathematics and possible ways It can be done in my building.

Interview with Female Students Regarding Thoughts on Science

This interview is with two former students regarding their changing opinions about science from middle school when they were in my classes to high school. Both students are now high school seniors and have completed at least 2 high school level science courses.

Program Outcome 3

Model Best Practices

Educational Technology Program Outcome 3:

Design, develop, and implement technology-rich programs that model best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment.

In the 21st Century classroom, students are able to, with approrpiately designed learning environments that include technology, reach beyond the classroom to learn and self assess their understanding of their world.

  1. ADDIE Develop (1).docx.pdf ADDIE Develop (1).docx.pdf
In this paper from ET 5053, I designed and created a learning environment that includes hands on inquiry, video and technology in the form of simulators to teach a chemistry lesson. In the lesson, I was careful to research several websites with simulators, making sure the information presented was accurate and valid for what I needed my students to use.
  2. Web 20 Tools and Digital Storytelling rewrite.pdf Web 20 Tools and Digital Storytelling rewrite.pdf
From ET 5043: 8th grade science unit on Weather and Climate demonstrating integration of technology at the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.

Program Outcome 4

Analysis and Use of Research

Educational Technology Program Outcome 4:

Analyze research data, and use the results to modify instructional methods and content and to guide learners.

Educators should use scientifically based research, being able to analyse and use the results to provide the best possible instruction and content for learners.

  1. Overview Analyzing Assessment Literacy.docx.pdf Overview Analyzing Assessment Literacy.docx.pdf
From ED5013, this lesson looks at assessment literacy and my reflection on my ability to analyze data. I have discovered (and have always suspected), that I have a very traditional way of assessing learning and am considering new ways to assess learning via the use of technology.
  2. Overview Student Centered Assessment.docx.pdf Overview Student Centered Assessment.docx.pdf
From ED 5013, this application paper discusses a problem based learning (PBL)project my students completed on meteorology. In the 10 task PBL, students answered the question, "How can we predict and forecast the weather in different parts of the world?" This paper includes the original task list, rubric and a reflection on how the project went. I made a special point to provide varied ways to learn and present the material; the students had a choice to present live before the class, record the presentation and show that to the class, or complete a written report that I graded.

Program Outcome 5

Digital Citizenship and Global Awareness

Educational Technology Program Outcome 5:

Model safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technology to teach digital citizenship and global awareness.

Informational literacy and digital citizenship are important components of the education of students as they become life long learners. The artifacts shared here show my understanding of the importance of modeling and teaching appropriate behaviors while using the Internet.

Program Outcome 6

Ongoing Professional Learning and Leading

Educational Technology Program Outcome 6:

Participate in ongoing professional learning, research, and leadership in the profession.

ET educators are life long learners, collaborating and sharing their knowledge with others.  As part of our roles as leaders in our schools and districts, it is our responsibility to assist in the learning of others, and model appropriate behaviors and best practices in the classroom and professional development settings.
