Loosely translated, "Hear the other party, too."
This is what I bring to teaching: the ability to see all sides of an argument before making a decision. This is not to be confused with the Golden Mean Fallacy, where one takes the middle ground and averages the extremes. Rather, it is to say that we must engage in critical thinking by considering all aspects of a situation before making a final decision.
I learned this ability through my conversion to Roman Catholicism. While I hold my current beliefs to be true, empathy has allowed me to realize where I came from. In the process of stepping between worlds, I learned in the "in between" how to stop and reflect. I learned how to weigh all things in each decision and meticulousy scrutinize all aspects of a situation.
In such a partisan world as ours, I think this will be a most valuable skill to use when teaching my students. It will allow them not to reject their beliefs or scorn others, but to choose what is best for them and to have compassion for those whose beliefs are not their own. As an English Language Arts teacher, this will often become beneficial whenever I and my class encounter stories or plays involving different parties and groups.
A fine example would be the play Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare. My ability to dispassionately address the situation will allow them to, in turn, logically analyze both the Capulets & the Montagues, fully imaging the scenario. They will come to see that both parties posess elements of truth and that life is not always about following one absolute or the other. It will allow them to become free thinkers and approach a situation not simply based on one abstraction, but based with all critical-thinking tools at their disposal.
This is what I bring to the table of teaching: to hear all sides of a story in order to truly learn.
This section includes my program checklist, which list all of the course I have taken, am taking, and will take necessary to my teacher certification and program completion.
In this section, I discuss why I have chosen teaching as a profession. I think this work is a good demonstration of my passion for the field I will hopefully enter into. Of particular signifance is my second point: I desire to help students bring out their excellence.
In this section is my resume. Of significance is my widespread experience in the world of electronic & digital media. I feel this will give me an edge and adaptability in the classroom to the everchanging forms of teaching and engagement of the students.
