The Pre-K Mountain Lions 2013-2014

Welcome

Welcome to the Pre-Kindergarten program at Teton Valley Community School!  Welcome to the website for the Pre-K Mountain Lions, taught by Erin Tanzer and Caitie Quinn.

Our program is inspired by the innovative early education centers of Reggio Emilia, Italy. At the heart of this system is the powerful image of the child. Rather than seeing children as empty vessels that require filling with facts, Reggio educators believe children are full of potential, competent, and capable of building their own theories about the world in which they live.  In our classroom, we conduct in-depth Project-Based Learning which is guided by student's questions and interests. Throughout the evolution of project, all areas of child development (physical, creative, academic, and social-emotional) are addressed along with the essential skills of critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and acquiring a joy of learning.

Documentation of daily activities and long-term projects is also integral to the program. On this site, you can view how children are engaged in the learning process through photographs, examples of student work, and analytical observations from teachers.  Documentation promotes parent-teacher and parent-child communication and serves as a comprehensive authentic assessment tool. Enjoy!

Our Class Name

After several days of discussion and a lengthy voting process, our Pre-K class now has a name...The Mountain Lions!  This name was chosen by the students.  First, we brainstormed all our ideas.  Then, we narrowed down the suggestions to a few.  Finally, each child cast a vote for their favorite name.  We graphed the results to determine the winning animal.  Throughout the process, we practiced important pre math skills like counting, graphing, and engaging in the democratic process of voting and conducting important business meetings.

We are the Mountain Lions!
