Bees Wax
IMGP2956 (1024x768).jpg

At morning meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, we read, “The Magic School Bus: Inside a Beehive” and learned all about bees with Emily. We learned not only about queen bees, but nurses, and guards as well. Did you know that all the guard bees are female?  Emily brought in a frame so we got to see how honey is made, and we learned about honeycombs and counted the sides of a hexagon. We also now understand the term “the bee’s knees” and maybe most importantly, we learned and practiced the bee language: a dance called the “waggle”!  We handled bees wax and kept it warm in our hands and then sculpted with it, just like it was clay. On Wednesday, we took turns making our own candles out of beeswax.  We dipped the candles into hot wax over and over again, being careful not to leave it in too long or all the wax would melt off.  Bees are fascinating.  We love learning about honey because of our baking project, and social insects like bees are so intriguing to us.

It is the bee's knees!
