Alpacas!
Mo and Powder, TVCS Alpacas

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, we resumed our Farm & Garden class with Emily. This week we had the opportunity to learn about the alpacas, Mo and Snowflake! We started class with our eyes closed and our hands out. Emily put something very soft and fluffy in our hands. When we opened our eyes, we found out we were holding alpaca fleece, which is similar to sheep’s wool. Then we learned just how heavy a bale of hay is. We had to pull one on a sled from the barn all the way down to the Red House!  Emily told us about where hay comes from… it used to be grass, and now it is hay that can feed animals throughout the winter. Then, we learned about the way we need to behave when we’re around the alpacas. We need to move slowly as a group and be very quiet so we don’t scare them.  We pulled a couple of flakes of hay from the bale and prepped some grain in a big bowl and waited quietly for the alpacas to come close. They make some funny noises when they eat! Ask your Mountain Lion if they can replicate the sound the alpacas make… we practiced!
