This is a fourth grade unit that will be used in the classroom for two weeks. This unit focuses on The Titanic with reading and writing. The students will use their background knowledge and text clues to make inferences in their reading. They will also conduct a short research project to create a presentation over a passenger of The Titanic. The students will end the unit by presenting their presentation to the class.
Prior Knowledge:
Prior to this unit, students have used questioning to help them to better understand. The students are also very familiar with the technology used to create their Power Point
Presentation. The students are being introduced to the Slide format of Google Docs, but they are very familiar and comfortable with Google Docs system. Being familiar with the computer and site allows the students to easily take their research and create their presentation.
Demographics: This Titanic unit is being taught in a fourth grade classroom. The classroom is made up of twenty three students, with 12 girls and 11 boys. The class has a wide variety of ethnicities, including Caucasian, Vietnamese, Hispanic, and Italian. The students also vary in their learning level. There is a variety of learning levels where some students see a specialist for extra practice in subject areas, and some students are involved in the Gifted and Talented student program. There are four girls that miss class every Wednesday for GT. One student also leaves for math and another students leaves for math and spelling for extra practice with an aid. One student has Asperger Disease in the classroom and four other students have Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder, but only one of them are medicated. This a great classroom that provides a lot of variety and learning levels.
