World Literature for Children

Context
These assignments were composed in my World Literature for Children class. I worked alone to research and critique children's literature from a variety of cultures, on a variety of subjects, and by diverse authors. The attached documents are samples of the work I did in researching over 50 pieces of literature for elementary age children. In completing this project, I gained a helpful resource for identifying quality, multicultural literature.

Impact
By completing this assignment, I was able to compile a resource of literature which I will be able to use in my classroom to address a variety of cultures, issues, and values. In providing quality literature addressing diverse topics and cultures, I can help reach students from a variety of backgrounds and help them to develop a love of reading. I can also help expand the cultural knowledge and tolerance of my students by exposing them to a variety of cultures and people through literature. In providing quality literature which showcases a range of cultures and people, I am helping to produce more well-rounded, educated citizens.

Alignment
Standard 1
Indicator 3: In reading and analyzing these books I demonstrated my knowledge of a diverse range of historical and contemporary literature. The books I critiqued were written by diverse authors, and also featured or addressed diverse groups such as African-Americans, Hispanics, women, world cultures, etc. These works also represented a variety of genres such as informational, fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction, etc.
Standard 4
Indicator 1: Because these books were written by and related to issues from a variety of world cultures, I met the need for teachers to have a basic knowledge of the tapestry of world cultures. In reading quality children's literature on a diverse range of subjects, I have learned to appreciate creative works from other cultures, and I know have a more broad awareness of and appreciation for the contributions of world cultures.
Standard 14
Indicator 5: By having a resource from which to select multicultural literature, I am demonstrating my ability to discourage prejudice and stereotypes through modeling appreciation for other cultures. I am also demonstrating my ability to select bias free instructional materials.
