Standard 4 Checksheet

Context
During the fall 2005 semester, I created assignments to meet the requirements for my Social Studies Methods class. Some of the assignments included completing required readings and the accompanying quizzes, creating timelines, designing cause-and-effect visuals, and evaluating children's literature.

Impact
By completing these assignments and the course with a passing grade, I demonstrated my ability to impact student learning through appropriate social studies teaching techniques. I also demonstrated my understanding of the content needed to effectively teach social studies.

Having successfully completed the required assignments and this course, I demonstrated my understanding of economics, history, geography, citizenship, social sciences, and various cultures. All of these areas are needed to be a well-rounded social studies teacher. I also demonstrated my ability to design effective lessons to help my future students to be able to understand these concepts as well.

Alignment
Standard 4
Indicator 2: This indicator was met in providing correct responses on our first exam. In correctly identifying five social sciences and their relevance to elementary curriculum, I demonstrated an understanding of this indicator.
Indicator 3: In identifying the Developmental Progression model in social studies curriculum for K-5 students, I demonstrated an understanding of the progression of social studies teaching from self to nation.
Indicator 5:
When I designed a project for elementary students as part of my first exam in my Social Studies Methods class, I demonstrated an understanding of local and national traditions. I designed an example project for students to complete in which they would create a mobile to visually depict the significance of an American holiday.
Indicator 6:
In completing an activity on the five themes of geography for a selected city in the United States, I showed my understanding of basic geographic concepts. I also demonstrated an understanding of geographic concepts by completing the reading and correlating quizzes for a section on geography in my text.
Indicator 7:
In reading a chapter in my assigned text by Fritzer, I learned and demonstrated an understanding of economic principles such as supply and demand, resources, and industrialization, thus demonstrating an understanding of basic economic concepts.
Indicator 9:
After reading a book called Shh! We're Writing the Constitution and also reading assigned text readings from Fritzer, I demonstrated a knowledge of political science on my quiz. These readings instructed about government branches and history, current problems with politics, and how to teach related concepts to children.
Indicator 10:
In completing a cause-and-effect chart for historical events, and also completing the activity on the five themes of geography, I demonstrated my understanding of physical, cultural, and regional geography.
