Joan Toglia Ph.D., OTR is Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Dr. Toglia received her BS in Occupational Therapy from New York University. Her advanced graduate and doctoral work at Teachers College and Columbia University, School of Arts & Sciences included specializations in cognition, learning, measurement and evaluation. She presently holds a clinical appointment in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill - Cornell Medical Center, where she is presently co-investigator of a 3 year interdisciplinary project involving analysis of functional outcomes following stroke.
Dr. Toglia previously served as Program Director of the Graduate Program in Occupational Therapy at Mercy College and was instrumental in developing this innovative weekend program and integrating problem based learning throughout the curriculum. She successfully lead the program through initial accreditation and several re-accreditations.
Clinically, Dr. Toglia has over 30 years of experience in NeuroRehabilitation, working in acute, rehabilitation and outpatient settings with persons with stroke, acquired brain injury and other neurological disorders. She is recognized internationally as a leader in the rehabilitation of persons with cognitive perceptual deficits. Dr. Toglia has presented over 250 workshops nationally and internationally on topics involving assessment and treatment strategies for subtle cognitive deficits, mild traumatic brain injury, self awareness, right hemisphere dysfunction, nonverbal learning disability, spatial neglect, visuospatial deficits, and rehabilitation of executive dysfunction, attention, and memory disorders across different ages and diagnostic groups (see tabs for selected presentations). She is best known for her work on Dynamic Assessment and the Multicontext approach to cognitive rehabilitation and is author or co-author of over 30 publications (see selected list). Dr. Toglia has served as a reviewer for several professional journals in rehabilitation. In 2013, she was named to the Roster of Fellows of the American Occupational Therapy Association in recognition of her contributions to Cognitive Rehabilitation Theory and Practice.
