“My Involvement” is a section for documenting my experience connecting with people and/or organizations in the community and on campus. In U100 I attending campus events, joining campus organization, conducting an informational interview, and participated in volunteer work /job shadowing. In this section you will explain what you have learned from your campus/community involvement and how that has informed your major/career decision making.
Some of my themes I choose for this fall were IUPUI Athletics/Intramurals, Art and Entertainment, and student organization. These were my top choices because I like to be athletic, play Music and get involve with some service for helping others. I went to the Music Technology club which was held in the IT building in Room IT071 starting at 4:00pm-6:00pm, also went the call out for Jag band which were held Sept. 2nd, Sept 14th, Oct. 1st all at 6pm but the games are not starting until the first Jag basketball team starts. At the music tech, we were doing great amounts of group work, playing around with the musical instruments making a fun collaborated jam session. I also learned how to use some of the technologies that was there. For the Jag band, also tremendous communication skills come in hand, having to work with other students, it has not yet started but from experience of high school playing the pep band, I can say that it does require a whole set of skill to with social communication and cooperation. Both of these are very interesting to me because I’m interested in doing something with music as one of my many choices of interests of careers. In the next few months, I would like to find and join some art group and maybe go to an athletic event or join some internarial team because I also like bring creative, as well as doing some form of team work.
Sadly, I did not get a chance to attend any of the singular meetings of the careers of that week, but I did attend to larger career day on the 4th of October. If I could have gone, I would probably decide to show up at the Geology & Environmental Sciences Career Panel from 12-1:15p, but I had class at that time. I’m somewhat interested in this work because I enjoy most of the careers which required mw to be out doors and psychically doing tasks. I wished there were some biology some music panel for me to explore a little but I think that the career day on the 4th did inform me about multiple careers relating to music which was music technology, also that day help me opened my mind up of all the new information received that day. I went and talked to the Arts booth which was not scheduled on any of the days except of that day, this gave me better understanding of what form of art class to take and also what are some of the careers I can go in to. As I said before anything with some form of creativity, I really enjoy doing. The IUPUI events/ connection board online is pretty helpful on scheduled events that are coming up and that I think when having events, I feel that it should happen twice on a different day and time so that students who can’t attend can at other available time.
This part was very difficult sense that I really didn’t know many people who has a profession which I was interested in. I use my dad for my interview, he is a civil engineer, works for Jacobs engineering downtown, Phone number is (317)538-2602, I wanted to interview him because his job requires working with a lot of people in a team and that also they require to be creative on figuring out new projects, I was also interested in his earlier stages of life on how he choose and changed thoughts on a career and how long it took to finally decide on what he wanted And learned some of the struggles he had while he was in colleges and to figure out how he focused and maintain his learning. Unfortunately, the other person who I would really like to interview was KIM McMunn (765)491-2351, she works as one the team at the Indiana Wildcat Creek Wildlife Center located north of Indy 4709 N. 400 W. Delphi, IN 4923, but with her real busy schedule I could not find any good time to have a few words with her. I have great amounts of interests working with animals, helping and studying them, also it goes along with how I want my working environment to be, outside and having to work together in teams or groups.
The interview, wasn’t much of the profession I’m interested in but I learned more than I expected of that career, so I approached the interview more on the strategies of finding what I like and how to commit to it and work hard. I learned that civil engineering was a very difficult career to get into, even during college you must obtain high GPAs and that it required great amounts of time. I thought that this job would have somewhat art related since they have to make blue prints and designs which to work off of, which Is true, but it is very minimal because all they do with blueprints is to fix them up to fit a curtain requirements and that the drawings were made by the Architectures in the building. He also told me how he had to run most of the meetings, saying this is important to get everyone on the same page of the work, great communication skill is highly recommended for the job. He has really decided as low as high school that he wanted to be an engineer because he has a creative mind that he wanted to use in his work. Also relating to this, he likes being the leader or boss telling people what to do. As well as, he like that he gets to bring people together and coordinate them on what needed to be done. He said that the people he works with really keeps him going back, he has met interesting people and that working with them increase his work ethic on just trying to work real hard every day.
Right now I am a little lost, but also learned a lot about some professions. I’m saying this is because I have got a better understanding of some of the careers I didn’t know about and some that I did that made me not want to pursue it. I am now in this bubble where I have a few interests that surrounds me that I really wanted to pursue but I think to do more research on it. Right now my interests are in either music, art or animal science. Apart from exploring the things on campus, I think I should look at the other school such as Purdue or Indiana University because I feel that IUIPUI does have great choices of careers but it’s not quite what I’m wanting except for the Music Technology and art course of which is my highest choice at IUPUI. I think if I explored Purdue for their animal science courses and degrees and either research more at IU exploring their Music programs and also science can make me feel more comfortable since right now I am feeling limited to the courses at IUPUI. With this should also talk some faculty member or an advisor to help me understand more about what can I do to feel more confident on my choosing, because I can follow my passions or I should think of something I kind of like to get more financial benefits because I might be more inserted in it later. At this point I am a little afraid of if I choose a path to follow and end up not where I want to be then I have no idea how I would back myself up, but first I should do a lot more research.
