Who?

Who should considering applying to the TEACH! US program?  Who is it geared towards?

Current middle and high school classroom teachers who:

  • Are working in schools that serve federally-designated "low-income students," including any middle or secondary school that is listed in the Department of Education's Annual Directory of Designated Low-Income Schools for Teacher Cancellation Benefits
    • There are many middle and high schools in southeastern Massachusetts on this list, including a substantial amount of schools in the following counties: Barnstable, Bristol, Norfolk (southern region), and Plymouth
  • AND already hold a preliminary license and are in need of earning an initial license in the following subject areas: 

Mathematics (grades 5-8 or 8-12)

Science - Biology, Chemistry, Physics (grades 8-12); General Science (grades 5-8)

Foreign Language (Spanish, French or Portuguese, grades 5-12)

History (grades 5-8 or 8-12)*

English (grades 5-8 or 8-12)*

* Prospective TEACH! UrbanSouth candidates in the History or English initial licensure programs are advised to pursue an "add-on" license in Special Education in order to be eligible for the Teach Grant program.  Please speak directly to the TUS Program Director (Tyra Lopes Mendes) or the Graduate Admissions Coordinator (Traci Almeida) about all of your financial assistance options.

We also encourage applications from inservice paraprofessionals, Monitor Teaching Assistants (from the Brockton Public Schools), long-term substitute teachers, and career changers who have a substantial amount of professional experience related to the content areas listed above.

Who are our former TUS students?

Since 2008, our TEACH! UrbanSouth teacher candidates have earned their initial teaching licenses in the following content areas:

  • Mathematics, grades 8-12 (9 teacher candidates)
  • Mathematics, grades 5-8 (11 teacher candidates)
  • Biology, grades 8-12 (9 teacher candidates)
  • General Science, grades 5-8 (9 teacher candidates)
  • Spanish, grades 5-12 (8 teacher candidates)
  • French, grades 5-12 (1 teacher candidate)
  • History, grades 8-12 (3 teacher candidates)
  • History, grades 5-8 (3 teacher candidates)
  • English, grades 8-12 (5 teacher candidates)
  • English, grades 5-8 (2 teacher candidates)

These teacher candidates conducted their field placement practicums in the following public school districts:

  • Brockton (37 teacher candidates)
  • Plymouth (7 teacher candidates)
  • Taunton (11 teacher candidates)
  • Wareham (5 teacher candidates)

The vast majority of them are still teaching in the same school districts.
