KICKSTART YOUR FUTURE: COMMUNICATIONS CARRERS (9/9/14)

This SLI was very informative being an IMC major. It was a great experience to learn about many professional tactics that need to be utilized in the "real world". We talked about the websites that Ithaca has to offer, regarding internships and jobs. Using these website's also requires for professional use of all social media. We discussed the use of Facebook and Twitter, and how you need to always be professional. We talked about how having personal and professional accounts are okay, and they allow you to keep things separate. Being professional is very important, as we also talked about proper cover letter techniques and of course the importance of having a good "elevator speech".

SLI: LEADING WITH YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD (9/10/14)

This Leadership Institute was based off of Zappos, the online shoe store. The main idea that we discussed were their 10 Core Values, which is really what Zappos goes by. We discussed all of the values in depth only because they really display why the company is so successful. We also discussed some of their statistics; specifically about costumer service, as for this area is where they maintain the most pride in their company. Talking about these areas allowed us to learn different strategic ways of success. Zappos exemplifies the definition of leadership, in all areas. They want all areas of business to be dominant so that there is a positive environment overall. They say that if all positions show leadership then there should be no area of down fall.

IMPROVING PUBLIC SPEAKING AND PERSONAL INTERACITONS THROUGH LISTENING AND RESPONDING

This workshop was very advantageous towards developing public speaking techniques. It was very straightforward and nothing remained unsaid. We did many interactive activities. The professor that taught it was in the arts department, and it was very obvious. She wanted us all to interact, and the main point that she focused on was listening. By listening she meant that during an interview or even a conversation you have to make sure that you actually listen to what the other person is saying and not thinking about what you are going to say. We worked on when having a conversation never talking about you, and maintaining the conversation about the other person. This makes you come across as a very intellectual person, and that is a very important trait.
