My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is that all children make progress in school, whether it is in academics, in their personal life, or in their social life.  All students make some sort of progress.  As teachers, it is our jobs to teach these children not only about what they need to learn to graduate, but what they will need to survive the world.  We need to prepare them to stand on their own two feet and we need to teach them how to be self-directed learners.

I plan to accomplish this feat by doing what is best for the child.  I believe that the student should come before all others.  I believe there are three types of students, the strugglers, the gifted, and the on-grade level students.  A lot of the time the on-grade level students tend to be the forgotten students.  What I mean by this is that they will be forgotten because they are not strugglers who need extra help and they are not the gifted students who need the extra work.  They tend to just carry-on on their own.

These students need just as much attention as the others or they will start to fall.  I have seen this happen many times and would like to change this habit.  I would also like to see a class of hetero-genius students.  Ability grouping can be good but I think classes of mixed abilities are great too.  In these classrooms students will be able to help each other out.  Gifted students can help the struggling students by working with them.  Struggling students can help the gifted students by allowing these students to be the leaders and helpers that they are.  This leaves time for teachers to help the on-grade level students who feel neglected.  And through all this, the students are forming bonds.  They are learning how to work and play together.

In this process, I think everyone benefits and everyone learns something new.  Lives are changed in schools and teachers play a big role in students’ lives whether they chose to or not.  I choose to change my students’ lives for the better.  I am motivated and ready to try my best to make a difference.
