Context:
This project was completed in CI 3110, in the summer of 2008 under the supervision of Dr. Eric Groce. This was a six point lesson plan that was developed for a Social Studies class. A follow up lesson plan is also included.
Impact:
These lesson plan showed me how to properly develop a lesson plan that was complete and easy to follow. The development of this lesson plan also lead me into research.
Alignment:
Standard 4: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in social studies.
Indicator 2: Teachers understand the social science disciplines. Teachers:
Detail: Are aware of the rights and responsibilities of democratic citizenship
This indicator was met when I had the students research the Bill of Rights and had them come up with a right of their own that they would like to have.
This indicator was met because I used the book Dia’s Story Cloth by Dr. Dia Cha as a follow up. This is the story about a Hmong family who had to come to the US as refugees because of what happened where they were living before. If students knew a little about other cultures they would be less likely to make fun of something they didn't understand the next time.
Indicator 14: Teachers apply content to life skills. Teachers:
Detail: Provide an environment that fosters critical thinking and effective use of information
Detail: Require consideration of multiple views
This indicator was met because I had the students make posters as an assessment on what they had learned about the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.
Standard 14: Elementary teachers develop strategies to address topics that are controversial to diverse groups.
Indicator 3: Teachers guide students in developing rational solutions to controversial problems.
This indicator was met because students got to research the Bill of Rights and then think about a rule that they would enforce to help the people of the United States.
Indicator 6: Teachers search for more effective means of educating all students in creating effective instructional goals, methods, materials, and skills that match the diversity of students.
This indicator was met because I had them do a follow up with Dr. Dia’s Story Cloth which taught them about the Hmong people. Hopefully this will teach the students a little about tolerance and they will not be so quick to make fun of something that they do not understand.
