Science

Context:

Tis lesson plan was created with the assistance of my cooperating teacher in the fall of 2009 for my student teaching.  The first three weeks of school had a theme for each week.  The first week haad a theme of icecream.  Everything was centered around icecream.  Math , reading, science, and social studies contained some source of icecream content.

Impact:

During the first week the class made ice cream as a combination of math and science topics.  It was also fun for the students and they learned some math and science along the way.  I also learned that if you start the year out with hands on fun activitie then the student will be more likely to be more involved and know that they will have a good year.

Alignment:

Standard 17: Elementary teachers understand safety and liability issues in elementary and advocate for appropriate safety materials and enforcement practices in the classroom.

Indicator 1: Teachers ensure that safety issues are included in instruction and provide supervision during lab activities and field experiences.

Indicator 3: Teachers have a working knowledge and comply with the science Safety Laws, Codes, and Standards.

Indicator 4: Teachers model and communicate appropriate safety behaviors.

Indicators 1, 3 and 4 were met when each student got a copy of the safety rules that is used in the school.  We also went over the safety rules for the project and had them bring their gloves so that their hands wouldn’t freeze from tossing the cream in the bag..  We also had them wash their hands before they could touch any of the ingredients.
