K - 1 Center

Context:

This activity was done for GS 4401 in the summer of '08 under the supervision of Dr. Terry Carrol.  We made centers for K-1 students.  Specific formats and standards were met.

Impact:

We got to see waht it would take to come up with a Science activity that would be a learning activity where wtudents would be interactive and have hands on activities that they would be interested in.  All the senses were included except for taste.  Students were able to look, touch , and listen for information in helping them complete their task.

Alignment:

Standard 3: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in science.

Indicator 2: Teachers have knowledge of basic physical science concepts including:

Detail : Systems of measurements, analysis, and interpretation of data

Detail : Factors affecting chemical reactions

Indicator 2 of standard 3 was met through the students having to understand that only a certain amount of bears can fit in the boat.  They should also understand the concept of which boat will hold more bears.

Indicator 3: Teachers have knowledge of basic earth science concepts including:

Detail : Properties of earth materials (rocks, minerals, fossils, water, air)

Indicator 3 was met when they had to make the clay boat and put it in the water.  They had to figure out what shape is best and how could they put bears into the boat without sinking.
