The links above are examples of students engaged in building a good social environment. A successful classroom should have those qualities of a solid rapport between the students themselves. Also, all the students having a good rapport with the teacher is also very beneficial. In my experience, the way the teacher treats the students, along with how the teacher expects the students to behave towards each other makes a great difference. In my first teaching placement, the teacher would commend those who would act appropriately towards their fellow student, and a positive expectation was created and sought. However, in my second placement, the teacher would frequently intervene once two (or more) students were already engaged in negative behavior towards each other. The way I observed the teacher handle that situation was not very affective as she would use negative reinforcement for all parties involved. I believe that encouraged negative behavior on the part of the student, after all the teacher was modeling negativity and not compassion. I realize that compassion and positive reinforcement and expectations are key to creating a positive social environment in the classroom.
