Unit:  Just So Stories

Objective: Students will read Kipling’s Just So Stories and work to write and revise their own Just So Stories.  They will identify a topic under the above capstone which will be a variation of Kipling’s Just So Stories. They will create and write their stories focusing on the use of dialogue. They will read their stories to a group of 1st and 2nd graders who will then draw pictures for the Just So Stories.

ODE Benchmarks Addressed:  WRTP A, WRTP C-E, WRTA A

1. How does the Just So Stories relate to our Classification Capstone? Explain in detail.

The Just So Stories relate to our Classification Capstone because of how it dealt with animals and them fitting into a group of species. We had to make a story about how an animal got or lost a feature. Another way that it related to the Capstone was because we had to organize the story.

2. What did you like and/or dislike about writing your own Just So Story? Explain in detail?

What I liked about writing my own Just So Story was being able to use my imagination and create something that was my own. What I didn’t like about my own Just So Story was that it was difficult thinking of ways to make a four page story for elementary students and relating to them through the story.

3. What was your experience working with the elementary students? Give a detailed summary of your experience.

My experience working with the elementary students was difficult. My story to them was not that interesting and I don’t think they were able to relate to the story. It was interesting to work with the students because they were a different age.

4. Would you work with elementary students in the future? Give 3 examples of how we can work with elementary students in all subject areas.

I would like to work with elementary students in the future because it is a challenge for me and I would like to work on that. For Geometry, we could have them make pictures out of shapes. For Science, we can have them help classify and organize things in their classroom. For Social Studies, we could help them with their presidents or something related to what we are doing at the time.
