OBJECTIVE: A full-time core faculty position teaching Music Technology and related Audio Arts at the college level.

 

SUMMARY: In addition to two decades of experience as an educator, I have a broad range of musical and technical experience, with a strong background in Music Technology, Computers, and Film Scoring.

 

RELEVANT EMPLOYMENT HISTORY:

  • Full-time Assistant Professor in the Music Industry + Technology Program at Mercy College, White Plains, NY. Courses taught include Audio Production I and II, Recording Studio Workshop I and II, Advanced Recording Studio Production Techniques, Survey of Music Production Styles, Introduction to MIDI I and II, Advanced Computer Applications and MIDI, Electronic Music Synthesis, Digital Audio Systems I and II, Basic Studio Maintenance, and Audio for Video. Other duties include advising students on course registration; mentoring students in Independent Study projects; opening, closing, and securing facilities; wiring design of studios; and developing and overseeing curriculum for the Music Industry and Technology Department [2001-present; Adjunct Instructor, 1998–2001].

  • Technical Supervisor at Damfino Productions, New York, NY. Responsible for training a staff of over fifty MIDI Programmers and Mixing Engineers on software and music production techniques used in an all-MIDI karaoke project. The company delivered over 3,000 MIDI sequences to its client during my tenure [Jan. 1994–Jan. 1995]. I have since worked for Damfino as a freelance MIDI Programmer.
  • Owner/Operator of MU Music International, a project-based recording and film scoring studio catering to independent recording and media clients [1992–2002].
  • Adjunct Instructor of Audio Recording at Center for the Media Arts, New York, NY. Subjects taught included Music Business, Acoustics, Analog & Digital Editing, Mixing, Introduction to the Studio, Recording Studio Workshop, and Video Post-Production [1990–1993].
  • Maintenance Technician at Power Station, Inc., New York, NY. Duties included opening, closing, and securing multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art recording studio; setting up studio and aligning studio equipment for each session; repairing and replacing malfunctioning equipment during client sessions; and installation and wiring of new studio facilities [1988–1990].
  • Night Studio Supervisor at Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA. Duties included opening, closing, and securing a six-room, million-dollar, educational studio complex; signing out tapes, equipment, and microphones; monitoring student-run recording sessions; enforcing departmental policies; and tutoring students on theory and applications of music technology equipment [1987–1988].

Selected Professional Credits for Stephen B. Ward:

Composing and Film Scoring:

  • Wrote and produced the title song for the short film Some Jobs Are Simple, directed by Jim Evans for Dead On Films (2009).
  • Composed score and feature music for Juvenile Justice, which aired on PBS’s Frontline in January 2001.
  • Twice selected to compose music for Toons, Tunes, and Trikfilms, a program of film music played live to silent films, presented as part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s “Golden Silents” Series [Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend, November 1999, and Boomer, May 2001].
  • Composed score for Eternal Memory: Voices from the Great Terror, a documentary depicting Stalinist atrocities in the Ukraine [1997]. The film was directed by David Pultz for Wellspring Films, and narrated by Meryl Streep.
  • Composed score, title music, and feature music for Murder Too Sweet [1994], a short comedy directed by Marcy Hedy Lynn for Whim Wham Productions.
  • Composed commissioned works for the Tufts University and Brandeis University Big Bands.

 

Audio Engineering:

  • Dialog, SFX editing and rerecording for the short film Some Jobs Are Simple, directed by Jim Evans for Dead On Films (2009).
  • Engineered several albums by Grandmaster Flash for various record labels, including Salsoul, Atlantic, London/Sire, and Thump Records.
  • Recorded complete customer-service voicemail messaging systems for Juno Online Systems.
  • Recording and Mastering Engineer for several local artists, including John D’Iorio, José Feliciano, Malcolm Hunter, John Hollenbeck, Junkyard Angels, Mephiskapheles, Mini-King, Matt Moran, Peter Neumann, Diane Ponzio, Gena Raps, Susan Share, Ken Vogel, and Thad Wheeler.
  • Mixing Engineer for 8118 Music, a provider of background music for several television news shows, including Case Closed, After the Verdict, Trial Story, and Inside Edition [1992–2004].
  • Studio Design and Installation Consultant for several clients, including Grandmaster Flash, David Lopato, Mike Mainieri, Nelson-O’Reilly Productions, Reale Music, Jamshied Sharifi, Splash Productions, and Sandy Wilbur Music.
  • Prepared testimony as an expert witness on album mastering in a case for the law firm of Thelen, Reid, and Priest on behalf of their client, Ahmad Jamal.

 

Musical:

  • Vocalist, Keyboards, and arranger for the band, The Beeps [2006–present]. The band is completing its second album.
  • Keyboardist and Vocalist appearing in New York with the Mimi Maura Band [2009-present.]
  • Keyboards and vocal for the band, PHAM [2007–present]. The band performed at the International Pop Overthrow Festival in Liverpool, UK.
  • Vocalist, organist, and arranger for the band, Uncle Izzy [1997–2005]. The band completed two albums.
