The Carroll County High School Building Trades program depends on several partnerships to guide, direct, and assist with the goal of preparing students for their chosen career track and being productive employees either directly out of high school or through continuing post-secondary training.
1. The partnership that is currently having the most impact on the Carroll County Building Trades Program is the one with the Fuller Center for Housing - Greater Carroll County Area. Through this partnership, FCH-GCCA has provided the funding for a modular house to be built on the school campus by the Building Trade students. This opportunity provides invaluable experience as students are able to learn on an actual structure. While skill practice and simulators provide valuable practice, there is no match for being on an actual residential project. This project was only possible through the funding provided through this partnership.
2. The Building Trades program also utilizes a partnership with Wytheville Community College. One particular advantage of this partnership came during the District 8 SkillsUSA Leadership Conference. WCC facilities and employees were utilized to host and judge several events including Team Works, Carpentry, and Residential Wiring competitions. Having the use of such professional personnel and facilities provided venues for a successful event for district students both to showcase their talents and to preview the post-secondary opportunities available to many of the district students.
3. Partnerships with local contractors and business leaders volunteering their time to help guide, direct, and validate the Building Trades program has become an integral aspect of the success attained over the past few years. Contractors inform the program of current industry trends and reiterate the expectations of employees in the workplace, while supply house sales personnel volunteers assist with networking as other construction professionals names and skills are conveyed. Additionally, these material salespeople inform the instructors of some of the new and innovative products arriving in the marketplace.
4. While many programs have access to a guest speaker that can speak to the students on industry insights, practices, and expectations, the Carroll County Building Trades program has a Class "A" contractor that can stay all day spending time with each class and carrying out instruction.
5. The local VFW became a valuable partner in two ways. First, they invited the Building Trades program to erect a rear wall connecting to the Veterans War Memorial. This provided an off-campus work site where the students were undertaking a real and important project. A secondary advantage came through community perception. Because this project was on one of the main streets through town, it served as a showcase of the professionalism and capabilities of the students in the Building Trades program. The students' skills were further introduced to the public through press coverage. When the program has a positive public perception, employers are more interested in hiring the program's students.
