Artifact 80 - Evidence of Self-analysis (e.g., Local Exemp. Stds. Program Review)

The Carroll County High School Building Trades program is continually involved in self-monitoring.  The monitoring process starts with the initial ideas that built the current program and how well the ideas and decisions are working to meet the ultimate goal of providing a well-rounded education to all interested, allowing for the individual advancement of the student in a specific area of choice, and preparing students for the expectations of the work place. The included list is the result of a continual self-analysis.

The program enrollment has been on a steady increase

  • It is worth noting that the current instructors inherited a program that had 9 Building II students in the Fall of 2004 and dropped to 6 in Spring of 2005 due to 3 students failing a class required for graduation at the end of the semester.
  • There is not  much room left for the program to continue to grow due to mandated class sizes (maximum of 20 students).
  • The current average enrollment is 18.25 students per class.
  • The Building Trades program is reaching around 10% of the entire student population.  Carroll County High School is a comprehensive high school with academic, fine arts, athletics, and vocational under one roof and is the only high school in the county.

Non-Traditional Enrollments

  • The female enrollments, while fluctuating, remain in excess of 10% and have currently reached 14%.
  • This is a strong result for a program such as Building Trades.

SkillsUSA Competitions

  • Between 2005 and 2010, 80 place awards have been earned by Building Trades Students at the District, State, and National levels of competition, countless others having competed at these competitions
  • Mr. Warren has taken a total of 15 students to the SkillsUSA Leadership Conference between three trips (7 leadership finalist and 1 Cabinetmaking - Gold Winner).
  • Due to local economic conditions, all vocational students are included in the school SkillsUSA club free of charge.

Technology Acquired and Used

  • Upon examining the results of the NCCER industry certification test results of the Carroll County Building Trades students, it became evident, that the math section was the particular area receiving the lowest scores.  With the access to numerous classroom computers and the diversified student abilities, the decision was made to implement a PLATO math training program.  With this addition, there was an increase in math scores directly and an overall pass rate for our students for the subsequent test the following year.
  • The newly installed SMARTBoard now allows student interaction and full class viewing of information and processes of computer sites and downloaded demonstrations, in addition to Powerpoint presentations.
  • Access to classroom computers allows for students to do individual project research and also to do group website exploration.  For example, during OSHA training, students walk through the OSHA site to become familiar with the content and to know where and how they can answer their own safety questions in the future.
  •  Equipment utilized to stay current and meet the diversified needs of each student
    • 12 student computers in classroom
    • Wireless internet access
    • PLATO computer programming
    • SMARTboard
    • TV with DVD/VCR
    • LCD projector

Simulation Modules/Trainers:

  • Roofing Trainer (hips, valleys, and side wall flashing)
  • Electrical Trainer ( full 2BR layout with overhead and underground service entrances)
  • Plumbing Trainer (ranch house style kitchen, bath, laundry and water heater)
