In the summer of 2008 I began my own hip hop dance workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I networked with the local dance community, put my event planning skills to work, and produced a successful event. The sensation continued in the summer of 2009 with an increased total of 20 dancers in attendance. The purpose of this workshop is to connect local dancers and choreographers, expand the opportunities and experiences available to dancers, and strengthen the hip hop dance culture in Albuquerque. In the future I hope to expand the workshop into a camp for kids where they learn about the hip hop culture and history as well as obtain dance experience which would be relayed into a performance at the conclusion of the program. There are also future opportunities to expand the workshop into multiple types of dance as well as touring the workshop to other cities and states. Currently the event is held for one week each summer with a total of five classes running an hour and a half each. There are different choreographers each night and the number of attendees increase every year. A Hip-Hop Holiday Workshop was also produced in December 2010 during student's winter breaks which included choreographers from Los Angeles and Albuquerque. Coordinating this event has given me hands on experience in multiple areas including marketing and advertising, recruiting, budget management, scheduling, and networking.
