Prior to Field Experience

Incompletes in Program Courses

Candidates who receive incompletes (I) for any courses in the Professional Education sequence during Phase II and III must resolve the incomplete prior to the first day of a field experience.  This date may be in advance of the University deadline for resolution of course incompletes. A candidate would not be able to begin in their field experience placement until the incomplete is resolved and thus may be required to completed additional field experience days after the scheduled internship period in order to meet the required number of days.

Disability Accomodations

Students with any type of recognized and confirmed disability that would require accommodations during a field experience should inform the PreK-9 program coordinator and Clinical Coordinator prior to a field experience, including the submission of a letter prepared by Disability Support Services. Candidates should be aware that the demands and needed accommodations of a classroom course and a field experience may differ significantly, so candidates who are in need of field-based accommodations are encouraged to develop a separate accommodation plan for the field experience. It is the candidate’s responsibly to initiate that accommodation process for each field experience.

Meetings

Candidates must attend an orientation meeting prior to beginning the Assistantship, Internship I and II experience each semester. These orientations may occur prior to the start of classes at the university. Failure to attend this orientation meeting will result in a delayed start to the field experience, until after a make-up orientation session can be completed with the program oversight coordinator. Candidates completing Internship II are also required to attend “Tweener Day”, a special seminar meeting scheduled at the mid-point of the Internship II semester. Tweener Day is counted as a professional development day and will be recorded on the candidate’s time record for that semester.

Pre-Practice Visit

Candidates are expected to complete a Pre-Practice visit with their upcoming Mentor Teacher the prior to the beginning of the induction or field experience for that semester. Once the placements are announced, each candidate is required to then contact his/her mentor teacher by phone or email and arrange for a Pre-Practice visit, preferably before the close of the semester. Intern I’s will complete a 1 hour visit and the visit for Intern II’s will be 3 hours.  A Pre-Practice Visit card must be signed by the Mentor Teacher and submitted to the Office of Clinical and Field Experiences before the beginning of the next semester. The Pre-Practice visit is not included in the required days for internship.
