Clinical and Field Experience Overview

Assistantship

The Assistantship experience (ELED 307: Clinical and Professional Assessment Component) occurs during Phase II and is completed during the Block I semester. During this field experience, candidates complete 15 days in the classroom, working with a partner and their mentor teacher. During the Assistantship, candidates are expected to observe and collaborate with their partner and the mentor teacher in the design and teaching of a week-long instructional unit. Candidates will also be expected to design and teach several content lessons in conjunction with the methods courses in the Block I semester. A university supervisor will observe the partnership on at least one occasion. Other field-based course assignments will be identified and described in the Block I courses.

 

Internship I

The Internship I experience (ELED 494: Teaching Internship I) occurs during Phase II and is completed during the Block II semester. During this field experience, candidates will complete a 6 week internship in a PDS school, working with an assigned mentor teacher and university supervisor, for a minimum of 30 days.  Prior to the internship, candidates will make a pre-practice visit to the school and will complete an induction experience (Fall) or preparation days (Spring). During the Internship I, candidates are expected to observe and collaborate with the Mentor Teacher, gradually performing all professional and teaching responsibilities in the classroom, culminating in a minimum of 5 full days of planning and teaching, 3 of which must be consecutive. A 5 lesson instructional unit will be developed and taught during the experience. A University Supervisor will formally observe each candidate on at least two occasions. In addition, candidates must complete Block II course assignments and other field assignments outlined in the handbook. 

 

Internship II

The Internship II experience (ELED 495: Teaching Internship II) occurs during Phase III, in the final semester of the EC/Elementary, Elementary or Elementary/Middle program. Candidates will complete a 14 week internship in a PDS school, working with an assigned mentor teacher and university supervisor for a minimum of 70 days. Prior to the internship, candidates will make a pre-practice visit to the school and will complete an induction experience (Fall). During the Internship II, candidates are expected to observe and collaborate with the Mentor Teacher, gradually performing all professional and teaching responsibilities in the classroom for a minimum of 10 teaching days, 5 of which much be consecutive. Candidates will develop and teach units during the internship. One instructional unit, consisting of at least 5 lessons, will be evaluated by the Mentor and Supervisor. This unit will also be submitted for EdTPA. Candidates will also complete assignments associated with the EDUC 422: Leadership Seminar and will develop a professional portfolio, to be presented and evaluated at the Portfolio Interview event at the end of the semester.
