Week 0

Responsibility

Prior to Internship

Intern II

  • Orientation Meeting
  • Complete Induction days (fall only)
  • Tour school and make introductions (if new placement)
  • Collect school schedule
  • Collect School/County Policies and Procedures
  • Letter of introduction to parents by Intern (need approval by mentor and principal)
  • Review the OFCE Handbook, Intern II Appendix and other materials included in the Orientation. Any questions about the materials should be directed to the University Supervisor (US).
  • Contact mentor via phone/email to confirm start date, arrival time, and school site address.
  • Prepare any materials, lessons, etc., needed to begin field experience.  
  • Establish and maintain Intern II Notebook, daily time sheets, participation of daily activities of the PDS, lesson planning, Unit planning, etc.
  • Confirm TaskStream account is active. 

Mentor

  • Review the OFCE Handbook, Intern II Appendix online and other materials included in the Orientation. Any questions about the materials should be directed to the University Supervisor.
  • Meet with Intern to review roles/responsibilities and set clear expectations for the field experience. Provide Intern with classroom management, classroom schedule, units, lessons, materials, etc. needed to begin their internship.
    • Phone/email/F2F conference with US.
    • Submit contract to Frostburg State University.

University Supervisor (US)

  • Review the OFCE Handbook, Intern II Appendix and other materials included in the Orientation. Any questions about the materials should be directed to the Office of Field Experience
  • Attend Orientation meeting
  • Collect contact information from Intern. Distribute EDUC 495 syllabus, confirm school arrival time, and school site address.
  • Phone/email/F2F conference with Mentor to review roles/responsibilities and address any questions.

Week 1

Intern II

  • Conference with Mentor to discuss classroom and school rules/policies.
  • Tour school site and make introductions (if not completed prior)
  • Acclimate to classroom and observe/assist with daily activities.
  • Plan and teach a minimum of one lesson per day.  Provide mentor with lesson plan 48 hours in advance
  • Begin collection of evidence for Portfolio.
  • Schedule formal observation with University Supervisor (recommended for week two/three).
  • Phone/email conference with University Supervisor.
  • Establish conference time; conference with Mentor daily.
  • Complete weekly reflections and time sheet.
  • Conference with mentor regarding teaching schedule, unit topic, and unit planning.

Mentor

  • Assist Intern II acclimating to classroom and school. Introduce to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Discuss and plan timeline for transition of responsibilities based on suggested schedule with Intern. Develop tentative schedule for observation, evaluation, and teaching.
  • Support Intern in identifying topic for required teaching unit.
  • Conference with Intern daily.

University Supervisor

  • Make initial “Hello” visit to intern and mentor
  • Review Internship notebook, Time Sheets and Weekly Reflections; respond as needed.
  • Schedule formal observation with intern (recommended for week 2/3).
  • Check in with Mentor via phone/e-mail regarding intern’s progress.
  • Determine plans for interns completion of Unit

Week 2

Intern II

  • Plan and teach a minimum of one to two lessons per day.
  • Provide mentor with lesson plan(s) 48 hours in advance (or as directed).  
  • Continue to observe/assist with classroom activities.
  • Conference with mentor daily.
  • Complete Weekly Reflections and Time Sheets.
  • Begin or continue completion of PDS Checklist of Activities
  • Begin scheduling and planning of Unit with mentor
  • Collect evidence for Portfolio
  • Formal Observation #1 with US followed by onsite conference with mentor (when possible) and US.
  • Provide US with lesson plan (for scheduled observation #1) a minimum of 24 hours in advance (or as directed). Use of TaskStream.
  • Schedule second observation with US (complete in week 4 or 5).

Mentor

  • Conference with intern daily. Continue to support Intern as they observe/assist with classroom activities.
  • Review intern’s lesson plan(s); provide guidance and feedback as needed.
  • Assist with completion of PDS Checklist of Activities
  • Establish and schedule teaching unit with Intern

University Supervisor

  • Be available for questions and feedback.
  • Check in as needed with Intern and/or Mentor.
  • Review internship notebook, time sheets and weekly reflections; respond as needed.
  • Review components/requirements PDS Checklist of Activities
  • Formal observation #1 with Intern followed by conference with Intern and Mentor.

Week 3

Intern II

  •  Plan and teach a minimum of two to three lessons per day.
  •  Provide Mentor with lesson plans in advance (or as directed).
  • Continue to assist with classroom activities.
  •  Conference with Mentor daily.
  • Complete weekly reflections and time sheet.
  • Continue completion of PDS Checklist of Activities
  • Continue unit planning
  • Collect evidence for Portfolio
  • Formal observation #1 (if not completed during week 2) with US followed by onsite conference with Mentor (when possible) and US.
  • Provide US with lesson plan (for scheduled observation #1) a minimum of 24 hours in advance (or as directed). Use of TaskStream.
  • Schedule second observation with US (complete in week 4 or 5).

Mentor

  • Conference with intern II, increase intern responsibilities and workload.
  • Conference with intern daily.
  • Review intern’s lesson plans, provide guidance and feedback as needed.
  • Support intern in preparation for unit

University Supervisor

  • Be available for questions and feedback.
  • Check in as needed with intern and/or mentor.
  • Review Internship Notebook, Time Sheets and Weekly Reflections; respond as needed.
  • Conference with intern regarding unit planning and teaching.
  • Formal observation #1 (if not completed during week 2) with intern followed by onsite conference with mentor (when possible)
  • Schedule second observation with intern (complete in week 4/5).

Week 4

Intern II

  • Plan and teach a minimum of two to three lessons per day

  • Provide US with lesson plan (for scheduled observation) a minimum of 24 hours in advance (or as directed).
  • Schedule Unit Preparation Interview with US

Mentor

  • Phone/email conference with US as needed.
  • Continue to increase Intern responsibilities and workload.
  • Conference with intern daily.
  • Review intern’s lesson plans, provide guidance and feedback as needed.
  • Support intern in preparation for Unit

University Supervisor

  • Check in with Mentor via phone/e-mail regarding intern’s progress.

Week 5

Intern II

  • Provide US with lesson plan (for scheduled observation) a minimum of 24 hours in advance (or as directed).

Mentor

  • Continue to increase Intern responsibilities and workload.
  • Conference with Intern daily.
  • Review Intern's lesson plans, provide guidance and feedback as needed.
  • Support intern’s planning and implementation of unit

University Supervisor

  • Formal observation of Intern followed by conference with Intern and Mentor.
  • Be available for questions and feedback.
  • Check in as needed with Intern and/or Mentor.
  • Review Internship Notebook, Time Sheets and Weekly Reflections; respond as needed.
  • Formal observation #2 (if not completed during Week 4) with Intern followed by onsite conference with Mentor and US.
  • Schedule mid-point evaluation with Mentor and Intern (complete in Week 7)

Week 6

Intern II

  • Review Mid-Evaluation forms with Mentor. Complete the Intern portion of the form. Prepare for conference
  • Plan and teach a minimum of three to four lessons per day.
  • Provide Mentor with lesson plans in advance (or as directed).
  • Continue to assist with classroom activities.
  • Conference with Mentor daily.
  • Complete Weekly Reflections and Time Sheets.
  • continue completion of PDS Checklist of Activities
  • Collect evidence for Portfolio
  • Complete requirements for Unit, based on schedule determined with Mentor and US
  • Continue to complete PDS Checklist of Activities

Mentor

  • Review Mid-Evaluation forms with Intern. Complete the Mentor portion of the forms. Prepare for conference.
  • Conference with Intern daily.
  • Review Interns lesson plans, provide guidance and feedback as needed.

University Supervisor

  • Be available for questions and feedback.
  • Check in as needed with Intern and/or Mentor.
  • Review the Mid-Evaluation forms.
  • Prepare for conference

Week 7

Mid-term

Intern II

  • Plan and teach a minimum of four lessons per day.
  • Provide Mentor with lesson plans 48 hours in advance (or as directed).
  • Continue to assist with classroom activities.
  • Conference with Mentor daily.
  • Complete Weekly Reflections and Time Sheets.
  • Continue completion of PDS Checklist of Activities
  • Collect evidence for Portfolio
  • Complete requirements for Unit, based on schedule determined with Mentor and US.
  • Mid-Evaluation of Intern. Conference with Mentor and US at school site
  • Schedule third observation with US (should be completed during week 8/9)

  • Review Evaluation forms with Mentor. Complete Intern portion of the form. Prepare for the conference
  • Plan and teach a minimum of three to four lessons per day.
  • Provide Mentor with lesson plans 48 hours in advance (or as directed).
  • Continue to assist with classroom activities.
  • Conference with Mentor daily.
  • Complete weekly reflection and time sheet.
  • Finalize Portfolio evidence
  • Continue completion of PDS Checklist of Activities
  • Complete requirements for Unit. Prepare Unit for evaluation.

Mentor

  • Review Evaluation forms with Intern. Complete Mentor portion of the form. Prepare for conference
  • Conference with Intern daily.
  • Review Intern's lesson plans; provide guidance and feedback as needed.
  • Conference with US regarding Unit evaluation, if not already completed

University Supervisor

  • Be available for questions and feedback.
  • Check in as needed with Intern and/or Mentor.
  • Review Evaluation forms. Prepare for conference
  • Conference with Mentor regarding Unit evaluation, if not already completed

Week 13

Intern II

  • Evaluation of Intern. Conference with Mentor and US at school site.
  • Plan and teach a minimum of two to three lessons per day.
  • Provide Mentor with lesson plans 48 hours in advance (or as directed).
  • Continue to assist with classroom activities.
  • Conference with Mentor daily.
  • Complete weekly reflections and time sheets.

Week 14

Final

Intern II

  • Plan and teach a minimum of one to two lessons per day
  • Provide Mentor with lesson plans 48 hours in advance (or as directed).
  • Continue to assist with classroom activities.
  • Conference with Mentor daily.
  • Complete weekly reflections and time sheets.
  • Prepare for Exit Interview Night
  • Prepare all documents for signatures from intern, mentor and submit to university supervisor

Mentor

  • Conference with Intern daily.
  • Review Intern's lesson plans; provide guidance and feedback as needed.
  • Complete all final forms and paperwork.

University Supervisor

  • Be available for questions and feedback.
  • Check in as needed with Intern and/or Mentor.
  • Evaluate internship notebook, time sheets and weekly reflections
  • Collect all signed documents for Permanent File

Note: This is a recommended schedule based on a 14-week (70 days) Internship assignment. The Mentor should ultimately determine the timeline for transitioning responsibilities to the Intern based on the school schedule and curriculum. Supervisors should consult the Mentor and Intern regarding the process and schedule for unit planning, teaching and evaluation.
