2.4 Institutional Mission

The institution has a clearly defined, comprehensive, and published mission statement that is specific to the institution and appropriate for higher education. The mission addresses teaching and learning and, where applicable, research and public service. (Institutional Mission)

Compliance Status

Louisiana State University and A&M College is in compliance with this principle.

Narrative

Louisiana State University and A&M College (LSU) is the state’s flagship institution. LSU has a clearly defined and comprehensive mission statement that addresses the uniqueness of its role as the state’s flagship university by referring to the range of degree programs offered, standards of faculty, and resources dedicated to problem solving. The mission statement is grounded in the concept of a flagship institution where teaching and learning are intensified in a broad and diverse research environment. The mission statement was originally approved by the LSU Board of Supervisors in 2006 and reaffirmed in October 2012 [1][2]:

As the Flagship institution of the state, the vision of Louisiana State University is to be a leading research-extensive university, challenging undergraduate and graduate students to achieve the highest levels of intellectual and personal development. Designated as a Land, Sea, and Space Grant institution, the mission of Louisiana State University is the generation, preservation, dissemination, and application of knowledge and cultivation of the arts.

In implementing its mission, LSU is committed to:

  • offering a broad array of undergraduate degree programs and extensive graduate research opportunities designed to attract and educate highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students;
  • employing faculty who are excellent teacher-scholars, nationally competitive in research and creative activities, and who contribute to a world-class knowledge base that is transferable to educational, professional, cultural, and economic enterprises; and
  • using its extensive resources to solve economic, environmental, and social challenges.

The LSU mission statement is published and publicized on the university’s Website [3] and in the LSU General Catalog [4], among other places. The General Catalog begins with the mission statement and extended contextualizing information containing statements on “Historical Perspective” and “LSU Today,” along with statements about “Teaching,” “Research,” and “Public Service.” 

The LSU mission is a central tenet of the university and is clearly embedded throughout the principles of the compliance report, but is a significant component of Comprehensive Standard 3.1.1 and Federal Requirement 4.2.
