The institution’s curriculum is directly related and appropriate to the purpose and goals of the institution and the diplomas, certificates, or degrees awarded. (Program curriculum)
Compliance Status
Louisiana State University and A&M College is in compliance with this principle.
Narrative
The curriculum of Louisiana State University and A&M College (LSU) is related to the purpose and goals of the institution as well as to the diplomas and degrees awarded. Recognizing its unique role, scope, and mission as the leading academic institution in the state and as a land-, sea-, and space-grant institution, LSU offers “a broad array of undergraduate degree programs and extensive graduate research opportunities designed to attract and educate highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students” for the “generation, preservation, dissemination, and application of knowledge and cultivation of the arts” [1].
As a comprehensive institution of higher learning, LSU awards baccalaureate, master’s, professional, and doctoral degrees through its colleges or schools of Agriculture, Art and Design, Business, Coast and Environment, Engineering, Human Science and Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mass Communications, Music and Dramatic Arts, Science, and Veterinary Medicine. LSU offers baccalaureate degrees in 70 major fields, master's-level degrees in 76 major fields, doctoral (PhD) degrees in 47 major fields, and professional doctoral degrees in music and veterinary medicine. Semester credit-hour degree requirements are the same regardless of the method of delivery, i.e., face-to-face or online. As appropriate, the university pursues program accreditation by national bodies to ensure curricula quality. As noted in Comprehensive Standard 3.13.1, 24 external accreditation agencies have accredited 80 LSU degree programs at the baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate levels, and across several disciplines.
The necessary review and consideration required by the Louisiana Board of Regents Policy on New Academic Programs ensures that degree programs are based on fields of study appropriate to higher education and consistent with the role, scope, and mission of the institution [2] [3]. The policies and procedures required for the development, approval, and revision of new LSU degree programs and courses ensure that the university’s degree programs encompass coherent courses of study compatible with its stated mission. When submitted to the Louisiana Board of Regents, “proposals for graduate-level programs and for highly technical and/or selective baccalaureates require review by external consultants” [4]. Consequently, the proposed program is evaluated by an external source verifying the appropriateness of these programs in a higher education setting. Programs at LSU set the standards and “good practices” for the state as well as the nation.
Baccalaureate Degree Programs
The baccalaureate degree programs are listed in the LSU General Catalog [5] and in Table 1. All baccalaureate degree programs at LSU require at least 120 hours of undergraduate semester hours of credit. Like most, if not all, institutions of higher learning, LSU requires that students must develop general education competencies or essential learning outcomes in a broad array of disciplines in addition to competencies specific to their majors. This general education component [6] of the undergraduate program requires that students take 39 credit hours of course work in six general education areas:
