3.5.4 Terminal degrees of faculty

At least 25 percent of the course hours in each major at the baccalaureate level are taught by faculty members holding an appropriate terminal degree, usually the earned doctorate, or the equivalent of the terminal degree. (Terminal degrees of faculty)

Compliance Status

Louisiana State University and A&M College is in compliance with this principle.

Narrative

Louisiana State University and A&M College (LSU) typically has the required percentage of faculty members with the appropriate terminal degrees teaching in each major at the baccalaureate level. As shown in the two attached SACSCOC template tables, LSU has examined the percentage of student credit hours in major courses taught by faculty holding the terminal degree for each undergraduate major in fall 2012 and spring 2013 [1] [2]. General education courses are excluded in the calculation.  In all but one major, LSU well exceeds the 25 percent criterion. Nutritional Sciences fell from 32.4% in fall 2012 to 23.1% in spring 2013.  Ironically, this change was due to one faculty member being given release time to chair the SACSCOC QEP committee. However, when she returns, the program will exceed 25%.

In the calculation of this percentage the following degrees were considered terminal: PhD, EdD, DMA, JD, DVM, Master of Architecture, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Landscape Architecture. Additional information on faculty credentials is considered in the compliance certificate for Comprehensive Standard 3.7.1.

No distance education programs are offered at the undergraduate level at this time.
