As a high school student, I always enjoyed and excelled in math, but it wasn’t until my senior year that I realized that I wanted to teach. I was the student aid for the AP Calculus class and taught the class whenever the teacher was gone. I soon developed a love for teaching and decided to major in math education.
I attended Brigham Young University and loved my math education program, particularly the student teaching. I taught 7th grade Prealgebra, Algebra, and Math 7. Shortly after graduation, my husband and I started a family and I stayed at home for several years raising our young children.
After a while, I started to miss engaging my mind in mathematics and teaching and decided to pursue a Master’s in Math Education through Western Governors University. I have thoroughly enjoyed my coursework through WGU and have learned to increase my abilities in math content as well as pedagogy.
Approximately two years into my program at WGU, I decided to try to get back into teaching. I learned of a Developmental Mathematics Department at Utah Valley University where Prealgebra and Beginning Algebra were taught to college students who needed extra help before taking College Algebra to fulfill their program requirements. I felt that this could be the perfect opportunity for me and applied for an adjunct position. I have since taught one class in Prealgebra and I am looking forward to teaching Beginning Algebra next semester.
My love of math and teaching has only grown over the years and I have truly enjoyed learning and increasing my teaching capabilities. I also look forward to continuous learning in the future and hope to always have a desire to improve.
