Assessment

For this practicum experience I taught eleven lessons during the month of November. The unit consisted of eleven 50 minute classes, and introduced the concept of persuasion and persuasive writing. This was the first time this subject had been introduced during the school year, and the first time many of the students were to write persuasively in their middle school experience (6th graders). Other students, according to my cooperating teacher, had been exposed to persuasion during years past, but were still unfamiliar with the vocabulary or expectations of persuasive writing (7th and 8th graders). The following graphs were taken from a pre test given before the unit began, and a post test given on the final day of the unit. The other assessments included formative assessments through thumbs up/down, quick writes given every lesson, and a formal persuasive essay graded by rubric. A performance assessment finished the unit, comprising of a persuasive product project graded by point sheet. To see examples of the persuasive essay, journal writes, and persuasive product, please visit the lesson plan section of the work sample.
