Lesson 9

PERSUASION FINAL ACTIVITY DAY 2

Objective: SWBAT demonstrate their knowledge of persuasive techniques visually and verbally through a final project.

Materials: Butcher paper, scissors, colored paper, markers, colored pencils, tape, glue, stapler, glitter

Adaptations/Modifications: Check for understanding frequently with all students due to ELL status. Kari (IEP) to pre-teach material, reinforce vocabulary, and extend time for homework up to two days. Erika (IEP) extended time, regular breaks, quiet setting for testing, and shortened assignments. Brianna has the option to test in an alternative environment.

Literacy: Students will work in groups to create a written commercial script. Students will reflect in writing about the group process.

Set: “Please pull out your homework for last night so that I can check off that you completed it.” I will

walk around to check off students’ completion of homework. Next I will review the project we began the previous lesson. “I’d like all of you to please pull out the directions sheet so that we can review what we will be doing today for our group work time.” I will read through the directions again and ask for any questions.  (8 min)

Application: “Great! Now that we know what we are doing, the rest of the class time is yours to be working on this project. As a reminder, you only have today and tomorrow to write your script, make your visual, and tomorrow we will be taping. Please remain on-task!” I will be walking around the room to check in on student progress and help students as needed. (35 min)

Evaluation: “Thank you all for your hard work today. Please pull out your black notebooks and quick write from the following prompt: How is group work going? Is everyone contributing evenly? Do you have any questions or concerns I can address tomorrow before the final work day?” (5 min)

Closing: “Thank you all for your hard work today. I’m really looking forward to watching your commercials. There’s no homework for tonight. I’ll see you all tomorrow.” (2 min).

Reflection: Spent most of today wandering from group to group to help with questions or check on progress. One group is really having a tough time working together, and have to be prodded to get anything done. Specifically, Cesar is in that group, and he was very off task and keeping others off task as well. Once I spoke to them, and let them know that they are being graded on participation and as a group, they decided to work harder and get work done. Honestly I was kind of bored this period, since the students were working together so well, and required little help. I know that when I have my own classroom I will be grading papers, or the thousand other tasks there are while students are working. As it was today, I did not need to do anything else, and so just kept walking in circles. I think I was actually making many of the students nervous with my hovering.

Another important thing to mention is that this is the first day back from Thanksgiving Break, and students had obviously forgot quite a bit over the extended break. I needed to remind students what words meant (counter argument, visual) many times, even though they had seemed to get it before break. Once they got back into the swing of things, after I refreshed some of the examples I had used the previous week, it went much smoother.
