Lesson 8

PERSUASION FINAL ACTIVITY DAY 1-INTRO TO ACTIVITY

Objective: SWBAT demonstrate their knowledge of persuasive techniques visually and verbally through a final project.

Materials: Persuading Product handout (15 copies), example of persuading product video, Persuading Product Grading Sheet (15 copies)

Adaptations/Modifications: Check for understanding frequently with all students due to ELL status. Kari (IEP) to pre-teach material, reinforce vocabulary, and extend time for homework up to two days. Erika (IEP) extended time, regular breaks, quiet setting for testing, and shortened assignments. Brianna has the option to test in an alternative environment.

Literacy: Students will write persuasively in their journal about their persuasive product.

Set: “Please pull out your final draft of your persuasive essay. You should also include any rough drafts, notes, the outline, and anything else you wrote. I will pass out paperclips. Please bind everything together and I will be around to pick them up.” (5 min)

Application: “Today we are going to begin working on our final project for persuasion. I am going to spend most of today showing you what your final project will look like, and giving you the directions that you will need to be successful.” “The first thing that we are going to do is watch the commercial that I put together for you.” As a class we will watch the video. Immediately afterward I will hand out the persuading product activity guide. We will read through this as a class. I will place the example of my script on the overhead, and I will read it to the class. I will also show them the example of my visual. I will check for understanding periodically by asking students if they have questions.(15 min)

“Now that you know what you are going to be doing, I am going to show you what groups you are assigned to. But before I do that, please look back in your folder for the homework we did a few days ago where we listed five products that you use every day. You and your team members will look over your lists and decide what product you would like to create your own version of.” I will place overhead of groups up and help student get into the appropriate groups. “You will be spending the next 15 minutes with your group. By the end of the 15 minutes you need to have a piece of paper with the following information written on it:

TEAM MEMBER NAMES, TEAM NAME(you can make up a fun team name if you’d like)

PRODUCT

PRODUCT NAME

PRICE OF PRODUCT”

“Each team must have a different product for their commercial. Once your team has decided on a product, please raise your hand. I will write the product up on the board so that you know your team cannot use that same product.” (15 min)

Evaluation: “Okay, please hand in your papers and move back to your original seat. Please open your journal and spend the next few minutes brainstorming on your own reasons why someone would want to buy your product instead of a similar product.” (5 min)

Closing: “You won’t have any homework from me for the long weekend. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving. Please come get your questions answered about this project before you leave, so you can think about it during your weekend. Also, please be sure to tell me what product your group has decided on. Thanks!” (5 min)

Reflection: Today was really fun! I could tell the students were anxious since tomorrow is Thanksgiving, but the students seem very engaged in the idea of creating their own video. My own video turned out very well! Students loved watching Mrs. Brown, Mr. TLove and I try to sell them a product. They all remained on task, the for most part, as they worked in their groups. I was able to walk around and ask fun and interesting questions to the groups to get them thinking about how to create their script. This is really going to be a fun project!

Handouts

Persuading Product

In your small group you will be creating a fictional (not real) product, and persuade your classmates why your product is better than a similar product. You will create a visual of your product, write a persuasive script, and then I will record your group’s commercial. Please follow the steps below.

#1 THINK OF A PRODUCT

As a group you will decide what product you would like to “sell” your classmates. You product must have a name and a slogan.

#2 CREATE A VISUAL

Your group must have a visual to display in your commercial. On your visual there must be a drawing/representation of your product, the name of your product, important information (price, ingredients, description), and the slogan.

#3 WRITE A SCRIPT FOR YOUR COMMERCIAL

Your script must be persuasive. Think about using the persuasive words from your journal entries, and make sure to keep your audience in mind. Included in your script you must have:

  1. Name of Product
  2. Price of Product
  3. Slogan of Product
  4. Five facts about your product
  5. Five opinions about your product (ONE must be an “expert” opinion)
  6. Address TWO possible counter arguments

#4 RECORD YOUR COMMERCIAL

Every team member must be seen in the commercial and speak at least one line. The commercial itself must last approximately 30 seconds, but can last as long as two minutes. Creativity is encouraged, so feel free to dress up or bring props to use in your commercial.

When your team is ready, please bring your script to me for review. I will record you and your team members commercial.
