Adding fractions with like, or common, denominators.

When you add fractions with denominators that are the same, you add the numerator and leave the denominator the same. If you want to know why this is, please look at the picture for adding 1/6 and 3/6. All of the fraction pieces are the same size, which they must be to add. You add the 1 and 3 to get 4 and you leave the denominator which is 6. You may notice that your answer is 4/6 which you can reduce to 2/3 when you divide the numerator and denominator both by 2.

Let’s do another fraction, 2/7 plus 3/7. You add the numerators, 2 and 3, but leave the denominator as a 7. You don’t add the denominators because you are not changing the size of your fraction pieces. Let’s do one more before you begin practicing. 5/11 and 3/11, add the 5 and 3 to get 8, leave your denominator the same so that you have 11, your fraction is 8/11.

Please begin the practice portion and take your quiz when you are ready. Thank you for your hard work.
