When you subtract fractions you must follow the same rules you follow when you add fractions, in order to do the math your denominators must be the same, follow normal subtraction procedures where you subtract the second number from the first.

Here is an example 9/11 – 3/11, your denominators are the same so you may proceed, take 3 away from 9 and you’re left with 6, your denominator stays the same which is 11.

Let’s try it again, 4/5 – 1/5, your denominators are the same so you can go on and subtract the second numerator from the first, 4 minus 1 is 3, your denominator stays the same so you have 3/5.

Not all fractions have the same denominator though so you will have to make equivalent fractions just like you did with adding fractions

Please continue on to the practice section, then take the quiz when you are ready.
