Special Education Program

San Diego State University offers a program leading to the Education Specialist Credential in Special Education authorized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing:  Mild/Moderate Disabilities and Moderate/Severe Disabilities.  These credentials authorize the holders to teach students with designated disabilities in a variety of settings.  These credentials require completion of Preliminary requirements followed by completion of the Clear requirements within five years of employment in an authorized setting.  Once admitted, students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and must successfully complete all practicum experiences.  Only grades of C or better will count toward a degree, a credential, or a certificate. 

 

The Imperial Valley Campus offers the following Special Education credentials:  Completion of a Preliminary program is similar to a preliminary credential and authorizes the holder to teach in the area of their training.  Once employed, a candidate has 120 days to enroll in a Clear credential program.  The Clear program provides advanced coursework as well as support from the employing district.  It must be completed within 5 years of beginning the program, and the candidate must have two years of successful teaching experience within that time period.

 

       MILD- MODERATE  

 

This credential prepares teachers to work with children who require modifications in the standard educational curriculum and who are between 6 and 21 years of age.

Completion of the Preliminary program is similar to a preliminary credential and authorizes the holder to teach in the area of their training.  Once employed, a candidate has 120 days to enroll in a Clear credential program.  The Clear program provides advanced coursework as well as support from the employing district.  It must be completed within 5 years of beginning the program, and the candidate must have two years of successful teaching experience within that time period.

 

       MODERATE- SEVERE  

 

This credential prepares teachers to work with children who require instruction in functional academics, independent living, and community-based skills and who are between 6 and 21 years of age.
