Interview Process

After the application deadline and all applications are processed, the Division of Education will notify each candidate of
their scheduled appointments. The interview process consists of an analytical essay and an oral interview as described below:

Analytical Essay:  On demand essay regarding some aspect of the field of education with the purpose of assessing candidates' writing and
                           critical thinking skills.

Oral Interview:  An oral interview with a panel of Division of Education faculty with the purpose of assessing candidates' 
                         proficiency in communication skills, and disposition related to diversity and the overall skills of the teaching and learning process.

The following is a list of possible interview questions for candidates for admission to the Division of Education program.  It is possible that faculty members conducting the interview will choose questions from a list other than this one. Factors contributing to the overall quality of the candidate’s professional disposition, such as timeliness, clarity, and attire are important components in the faculty’s evaluation and review of each application.   

1. Why do you want to be a teacher? 

2. Tell me about your background, especially your educational background.

3. Why do you like working with youngsters?

4. At this time, what age/grade level(s) do you think you’d like to teach? Why?

5. Tell me about experiences you have had with children that lead you to think that you would make a good teacher.

6. What special skills or interests will you bring to teaching?

7. What do you think might be one of the most important things in teaching?

8. What do you think might be some of the things that you would never do as a teacher?

9. Preparing to become a teacher here in the Valley brings with it some interesting aspects in education.  Do you think that educating children in a
   border town is any different that educating children elsewhere?

10. What will you do with your summers?

11. What are some of your hobbies?

12. What is the name of the last book you read?

13. What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

14. Do you have any professional goals beyond teaching?

15. What do you think about bilingual education?

16. Is multicultural education an appropriate concept for public education and what do you think it should mean?

17. What rights do students have to an education which is paid for by public funds?
