I was born August 11, 1986 at Crouse Irving Hospital in Syracuse, NY. Due to medical complications at birth and over the next year, I spent my first seven months in various medical centers across the northeast. Following my arrival home in nearby Ithaca, I needed 24 hour care, help eating, and was unable to suck. I underwent several orthopedic and other essential surgeries. My recovery was a two-year process, but at age three I finally gained self-mobility and was able to freely explore the world.
Most likely, it is because of these early medical complications that I am now interested in pursuing a career with young children. During this time, I saw other children growing and developing normally, but was unable to do so myself. Now that I am older, I hope to help the next generation of children develop so they can lead as full a life as I currently live.
Prior to entering college, I was focused on being a teacher in a pre-k or day care setting. Since this was the only early childhood area I had experienced, I naturally assumed it was the path I wanted to take. My field experiences at SUNY Cortland have opened my eyes to other possibilities, and areas such as literacy or Special Education now seem like real possibilities. I have made this portfolio to show my passion for the field and that I am ready to work as an education professional.
