A large part of teaching is a willingness to accept and fully work with the wide range of physical and cultural differences that appear in the American classroom. Although the range of these differences is vast, language variances are the most common. Completing and reflecting on the interactive, web-based tutorial on English Language Learners (ELL) definitely helped me understand the needs of ELL, but my experience working in a 2nd grade ESL integrated classroom opened my eyes to the true nature of teaching a culturally diverse class. I experienced having to add pictures to instructions, working with the ESL teacher to ensure material was understood, and using other bilingual students to translate lessons to students who spoke no English at all. I am extremely glad I had this opportunity and will take what it taught me far into the future.
