I observed an ISS, also known as In School Suspension, period with my mentor teacher. My mentor teacher is very involved in conflict resolutions with students and teachers, and often volunteers to work ISS periods in her free time/planning period. Therefore, I observed how she interacted with the students in ISS, asking important questions, and offering potential solutions to prevent issues or negative occurrences from happening again. Unfortunately, more often than not there was a simple misunderstanding or the student lashed out after building tensions from outside issues not even involved with the class or their teacher. It is essential to truly listen to the student's perspective, to ensure the students feel that the whole school is "not out to get them." Another essential aspect I noticed while observing was that the teacher listened tentatively and then offered potential solutions, such as if the student is getting frustrated with the teacher perhaps take a walk to the bathroom, take deep breathes, or one headphone in one ear to distract temporary frustration. I did not take images of the students for confidential reasons, however I did document the forms that students are required to read and complete while in ISS. Although this time is certainly a punishment, as students are under no circumstances permitted to leave the room EXCEPT for the bathroom; their lunches are even brought to them in plastic bags. This time is also meant to be a reflective period as students complete the forms they think about how or why they are in ISS, and while they complete their classwork/homework they should also think of how to better prevent a similar incident from occurring again.
