Although a somewhat bleak topic, obituaries are extremely useful when it comes to learning about someone in history. Obituaries include important facts, events, quotes etc. that help defined that person. Therefore as we were beginning a new unit and a new U.S. President within the history classes I was teaching, I figured this article accurately summarized who President Gerald Ford was. The article that I read with the students was titled "Gerald Ford, 38th President, Dies at 93," which is also attached. I used this document within my Lesson #1 for both International Baccalaureate (IB) senior classes I am observing. Students had previously watched two YouTube videos, took notes during my short lecture, and together we (popcorn) read the attached article. Although a somewhat lengthy article (three and a half pages), I decided reading collaboratively would ensure students would read the document for homework, stay on task, expedite the reading process, and assist those auditory learners within the classroom. With both classes we took turns reading, I started off, and then called on every student at least once. Students were then assigned a ten question worksheet relating to the article, which they had the remainder of the class and the next three days to complete for homework.
