Cab Calloway School of the Arts, or as many call it "CAB," has a unique building composition. What once was Wilmington High School, is now composed of three schools, with additional extensions. Within this building the basement contains the grade school, a majority of the second floor is dedicated to Cab Calloway, and then a majority of the third floor is dedicated to The Charter School of Wilmington. Cab Calloway's halls are lined with artistic murals and pictures of Cab Calloway himself and his band. The building has a layout of a square, with classrooms, lockers, and halls lining all four sides; the inside of the square is open up to the outside where students are permitted to go outside for lunch. In addition to the lower level being dedicated for the grade school, that is also where the cafeteria is located. One side of the building is extended with a massive auditorium with extensive lights and speakers. Additionally, on the extended side is the pool. In the lobby there is an art museum and three pianos where students (with permission from their teacher of course) are allowed to play the piano freely. While walking around the building one could say it's easy to get turned around as you go around one corner to the next corner. However, due to its smaller size (as Cab's classrooms are only essentially on one floor) it is generally easy to become familiar with the layout.
Considering I myself am not extremely musically or artistically talented, I was amazed with the beauty of the school and talent of the students. While walking around during my tour it was fascinating to almost constantly be hearing music being played, students singing, or see students even practicing their dances in the hallway. Not only is the school full of instruments and pure talent, but it also has a modern Mac lab full of computers for students. The most incredible aspect I had to wrap my mind around was that not only are these students taking regular classes (i.e. math, social studies, English, etc.) but these students ALSO devote such an enormous amount of time to their selected 'pathway' or art that they have selected. Coming into to the high school the student must have at least one declared 'pathway,' which includes: dance, digital communication arts, instrumental music, piano, strings, technical theater, theater arts, visual arts, or vocal music. It was incredible to have the opportunity see such a unique perspective these students must have being surrounded by other students so interested in the arts. From hearing students playing "Ode to Joy" on the piano or "Let It Go" from the middle schoolers rehearsing for their musical, it was an energetic feeling walking the halls of Cab Calloway.
